Development Banks
Development Banks are established to assist poor countries financially in the fight against poverty. They can be national or regional and provide medium to long-term capital for investments that are promising to generate profit in those areas needed improvement. There are development banks in all over the world, each specifies in helping its region such Development Bank of Latin America, Development Bank of Asia, Development Bank of Africa, etc… Besides lending out money, development banks also involve in settling trade agreement, infrastructure and energy issues. They are known as the leading forces for economic reform in developing countries. Development Bank of South America is called Inter-America Development Bank (IDB). They provide assistance to 26 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to promote equality and improve standard living. It uses variety of medium such as Project Preparation Facilities, Financial Products, and Institutes. By using different techniques, the bank is able to give not only financial assistance but expertise and training needed to develop core areas like urban growth and education. Asia Development Bank (ADB) on the other part of the globe consists of 67 members, 48 of them are from the region and 19 are countries outside of Asia and the Pacific. ADB’s headquarter in Manila and work with government of its member countries as well as private sectors to develop an Asia free of poverty. It developed Strategy 2020 in 2008, under which three strategic agendas were put into place: inclusive growth, environmentally sustainable growth, and regional integration. The purpose of development banks are to work closely with the local government and make direct lending to those projects which will have substantial impact in the regional economy. Besides public lending, development banks also invest in private corporations’ equity to encourage private sectors to grow.
